What Organisation Schema Does
Organisation schema markup tells Google who you are as a business or institution. It is the foundation for Knowledge Panels, branded search results, and the information box that appears when someone searches for your company by name. Without it, Google has to piece your identity together from whatever it can crawl, and it often gets things wrong.
What to Include
Google has no required fields for Organisation structured data; everything is recommended. In practice, though, you should treat name, url, and logo as essential because Google explicitly recommends them and they are the baseline for any useful brand presence. Beyond those three, add a description, address, contactPoint, and sameAs links to your social profiles. The more you provide, the more Google has to work with.
Knowledge Panel Impact
Google pulls Organisation schema directly into Knowledge Panels. Your logo, official name, description, and social links can all appear there. The sameAs property is particularly useful. It helps Google verify that your website, Wikipedia page, and social accounts all belong to the same entity. Organisations with complete, consistent structured data are far more likely to get a Knowledge Panel and keep it accurate.
Things That Go Wrong
The most common problems: using a low-resolution or incorrectly sized logo, mismatching the name in your schema with the name on your website or Google Business Profile, and pointing sameAs links to abandoned or unofficial social accounts. Use your exact legal or brand name, link only to profiles you actively maintain, and make sure your logo meets Google's image guidelines.
